This image is a facsimile of page 493 of the second installment of The War of the Worlds as it was published in Pearson’s Magazine in May of 1897. Page 493 is mostly two columns of text, but the middle of the right-hand column frames a small illustration by Warwick Goble bearing the caption, “I startled my wife at the doorway, so haggard and disheveled was I.” The narrator is walking through a doorway at the right-hand side of the image, where he is greeted by a woman. She places her left hand on his right forearm as if she is concerned about him.
