This image is a facsimile of page 561 of the eighth installment of The War of the Worlds as it was published in Pearson’s Magazine in November of 1897. The illustration by Warwick Goble on page 561 takes up roughly the top half of the page, though it tapers down to the right and intrudes farther into the right column. Its caption reads, “The Handling Machine.” In the top right-hand corner, a Martian sits on top of the body of a machine similar to the bodies of their fighting machines, except without the tripod legs; it sits lower to the ground. Three of the Martian’s tentacles wave in the air, while the others operate various indistinct metallic-looking instruments on the top of the machine’s body. Longer tentacles drape over the edges of the machine. On the right-hand side of the image, in the background, a Martian sits on top of a similarly-shaped machine. Far in the background in the top left-hand corner are two machines we can presume are handling machines, standing up or rising on spider-like jointed legs rather than straight tripod legs.
