This image is a facsimile of page 367 of the first installment of The War of the Worlds as it was published in Pearson’s Magazine in April of 1897. Centered from top to bottom and off to the right side of the page is an illustration bearing the caption, “Find it he did soon after dawn.” In the bottom left of the illustration sits the top of a large cylinder buried in the bottom of a pit, surrounded by broken branches. In the top righthand corner of the image, the silhouette of a man is looking down into the pit, bent slightly over with his hands raised on his knees.
