This image is a facsimile of page 565 of the eighth installment of The War of the Worlds as it was published in Pearson’s Magazine in November of 1897. The illustration by Warwick Goble on page 565 splits the image diagonally from the top right corner down to the bottom left corner, intruding into relatively thin columns of text on each side. Its caption reads, “A multitude of crows hopped and fought over the skeletons of the dead.” In the foreground, two crows stand on bare human skulls, surrounded by rib cages and other thin bones. Several other crows sit in the grass in the background, two of them picking at a full human skeleton. In the far background, other crows sit near the silhouettes of two hills.
